Shelf and launcher
The shelf
The shelf holds GNOME's own indicators, so everything that shows up in GNOME's top bar works here.
- Position: bottom, left, right or top — Settings → Shelf and launcher.
- Style: across the whole edge or floating, with its own size, icon size, opacity and blur.
- Apps: drag icons to reorder, right-click to pin or unpin. A dot shows running apps; clicking an app with several windows cycles through them.
- Auto-hide hides the shelf under maximised windows.
The launcher
Press Super or click the circle. Start typing to search:
- apps, settings and files in your home folder;
- sums —
12*(3+4),2^10,200*15%; - the web — anything else goes to your search engine;
- recent files appear under “Continue where you left off”.
Choose what it searches and the search engine in Settings → Shelf and launcher. The launcher comes as a bubble or full screen.

When the assistant is on, an Ask Claude button (named after your provider) appears next to the search results: it sends what you typed to the assistant.
